Google AI Overviews Explained for CMOs

Google AI Overviews are the most consequential change to the SERP in a decade. For CMOs the question is not whether to optimize for them, but how to protect click share while earning inclusion.

How AI Overviews are generated

Google uses a tuned Gemini model with retrieval-augmented generation. It pulls candidate passages from the top organic results, ranks them by relevance and quotes the strongest.

This means classic organic rank is still the entry ticket, but on-page structure decides which passage is quoted.

What earns a citation

Passages that are declarative, self-contained and match the query intent tend to win. Long meandering paragraphs and unclear headings lose.

  • One clear answer per H2 block
  • Definitions in the first sentence of a section
  • Numeric facts, dates and named entities
  • FAQPage schema aligned to the visible Q and A

Protecting click share

When an Overview satisfies the query, users click less. Counter this by targeting queries where an answer requires a decision, a tool or a purchase, not just a fact.

Move informational content into deep guides, and reserve concise answers for pages that lead to a booking or a product.

FAQs

Do AI Overviews replace organic listings?

No. They sit above the ten blue links. Organic listings still appear and still receive clicks, but at reduced volume.

How do I check if my page is cited?

Run the target query, expand the Overview, and inspect the source cards on the right. Track this weekly across your top 50 queries.

Does schema markup increase Overview inclusion?

Indirectly. Schema improves passage parsing and eligibility for structured answer features that feed the same passage index.
